Every child deserves the opportunity to learn life-saving swimming and water safety skills in an environment where they feel safe, supported and understood.
That message is at the heart of World Drowning Prevention Day, held each year on 25 July to raise awareness of drowning prevention through education, awareness and access to swimming and water safety education.
At Rainbow Club, water safety is at the heart of every lesson. Each week, our teachers support children and young people with a disability to develop the swimming and water safety skills they need to be safer and more confident in and around the water.
To mark World Drowning Prevention Day, members of our Sydney South team attended the Sutherland Leisure Centre Water Safety Day, where they shared information about Rainbow Club’s specialised swimming lessons with local families and highlighted the importance of inclusive swimming and water safety education. More than 40 children, families and community members took part in the day’s activities.
The event also reinforced the importance of organisations working together to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn these essential life skills.
“I would like to extend our sincere thanks to Rainbow Club Australia for supporting individuals with disability and providing inclusive water safety education and guidance to families.”
Goran Rajchinoski, Sutherland Leisure Centre
For children and young people with a disability, learning to swim is about much more than developing a new skill. It can build confidence, increase independence and provide vital water safety knowledge that could one day save a life.
This World Drowning Prevention Day, we’re proud to stand alongside communities across Australia in helping make swimming and water safety education more inclusive and accessible for everyone.
