FAQ's - Join Rainbow Club as an Inpool Volunteer
Who can be an InPool volunteer at Rainbow Club?
Rainbow Club welcomes in-pool volunteers who are competent swimmers, aged 14 years or older, and willing to assist swim teachers in and around the pool. Volunteers should be happy to take direction, support lessons, and help with other tasks as needed.
What does an InPool Volunteer do?
As an InPool Volunteer, you’ll shadow our qualified swim teachers and help support the delivery of swimming lessons for children with a disability (aged 3 and up). You’ll assist children in building water confidence, learning safety skills, and enjoying swimming in a supportive, fun environment.
Do I need to be able to swim?
Yes. You’ll be supporting children in chest-deep (or deeper) water, so you must be a confident swimmer.
Do I need experience working with children with a disability?
Not necessarily. You don’t need previous experience, but you should be open to learning and willing to support children with a range of disabilities. We’ll provide guidance and training, and you’ll learn how to use gestures, visual aids, prompts, and other strategies to help children feel safe, understood, and engaged in the water. A patient, encouraging attitude is key.
Will I be expected to run lessons on my own?
No. Volunteers support, not instruct. The qualified Swim Teacher delivers the lesson plan—you assist under their direction.
When and where do Rainbow Clubs operate?
Rainbow Clubs run on weekends during school terms across NSW, ACT, QLD, and VIC. You can check your preferred club on our locations page.
How do I apply to become an in-pool volunteer?
Simply complete the volunteer application form above after checking the locations and times that suit you. Once submitted, one of our representatives will contact you to discuss the role further and help you get started.
Will I receive anything to wear while volunteering?
Yes! We’ll provide you with a yellow volunteer rashie to wear while assisting at Rainbow Club.
What checks or training do I need once I’m accepted as a volunteer?
Before starting, all in-pool volunteers must complete:
✅ NDIS Worker Check (NDISWC) – Required as you’ll be supporting NDIS participants. This is free for volunteers.
✅ Working With Children Check (WWCC) – Required if you’re over the minimum age in your state or territory. Free for volunteers.
✅ Child Safety Training – A short online module covering your responsibilities and Rainbow Club’s safeguarding practices.
✅ In-Pool Volunteer Induction – A short, practical session covering safety, communication, and how to support our Swim Teachers.
Rainbow Club will guide you through each step and provide all the necessary resources and links.

Do I need a Working With Children Check (WWCC)?
Yes – this is a legal requirement in every state or territory:
- NSW: Over 18 – Apply via Service NSW
- QLD (Blue Card): Over 18 – Apply via QLD Government
- VIC: Over 18 – Apply via Service Victoria
- ACT (WWVP): Over 16 – Apply via ACT Government
Do I need a NDIS Worker Check (NDISWC)?
Yes. All Rainbow Club volunteers must have a NDIS Worker Check, as you will be working closely with NDIS participants.

Train to Teach
Train to Teach is our two-day intensive training and safety program available for family and friends of Rainbow Club members or teachers.
